Welding Engineers

CWB Certification > Welding Engineers

Each company applying for certification in Division 1 or 2 of CSA Standard W47.1 or W55.3 must designate and qualify a Welding Engineer who is responsible for welding related activities as specified by the company.

Companies applying for certification in Division 1 or 2.1 of CSA Standard W47.2, or to CSA Standard W186, must designate and qualify one or more engineers who will be responsible for Welding Design, and Welding Procedures and Practice.

Companies applying for certification in Division 2.2 of CSA Standard W47.2 must designate and qualify one or more engineers who will be responsible for Welding Procedures and Practice.

The engineer(s) must meet the minimum educational and experience requirements of the applicable standard and complete the written examinations on the following standards:

For certification to CSA Standard W47.1

CSA Standard W47.1 | Certification of Companies for Fusion Welding of Steel
CSA Standard W59 | Welded Steel Construction (Metal Arc Welding)

For certification to CSA Standard W47.2

CSA Standard W47.2 | Certification of Companies for Fusion Welding of Aluminum
CSA Standard W59.2 | Welded Aluminum Construction

For certification to CSA Standard W55.3

CSA Standard W47.1 | Certification of Companies for Resistance Welding of Steel and Aluminum

For certification to CSA Standard W186

CSA Standard W186 | Welding of Reinforcing Bars in Reinforced Concrete Construction

If the educational requirements of the applicable standard have not been met, additional courses may be required.

Each designated engineer's educational and experience qualification information must be submitted to the CWB for review. An interview may be required to review the material submitted and discuss the engineer’s experience and educational background.
 

Questions to ask when hiring an Engineer

  • Has he or she been previously accepted by the CWB as a welding engineer under the particular standard I am applying for?
  • Are there other services that I may need this engineer for and can he or she deliver what I need?
  • Can the engineer give me some the names of their clients for references ?
  • How knowledgeable is this engineer about welding?
  • Where is the engineer located in relation to my business so that if I need their services he or she can respond quickly to met my needs?
  • How cost effective are their services to my business.?
  • What is this engineer offering that is better than others?
